A Cambridge contractor who knows the housing stock, the permit office, and the neighbourhood

Cambridge is not a uniform city. Galt has century homes with plaster walls and knob-and-tube wiring. Preston has post-war bungalows that have not been touched since the 1970s. Hespeler has newer builds where families are outgrowing the original floor plan. East Cambridge has working-class homes where owners want practical, lasting upgrades without being oversold.

We know the difference because we work in all of it. When we pull a permit with the City of Cambridge, it is not a first-time exercise. We know the building department, we know the inspection process, and we know how to move a project through it without the delays that slow down contractors who are less familiar with the jurisdiction.

Every project we take on in Cambridge is governed by the Complete Renovation Standard: the same documented framework we apply to every project across Waterloo Region. It does not change based on the neighbourhood or the budget. What changes is how we apply it to your specific home and what you are trying to accomplish.

Cambridge — Galt

Galt

Galt is where Cambridge's oldest housing stock lives. Most of these homes were built between 1880 and 1940, and they carry everything that comes with that era: plaster walls, knob-and-tube wiring, gravity furnaces, low basement headroom, and in some cases no insulation worth speaking of. They also carry real character that newer builds simply do not have. We renovate heritage and century homes in Galt regularly and understand how to upgrade the bones and systems of an older home without stripping out the features that make it worth renovating in the first place. Permit work in Galt sometimes involves heritage considerations depending on the property and the scope, and we know how to navigate that.

Preston

Preston is full of post-war bungalows and split-levels that have served families well for decades but are starting to show their age. Most of these homes were built between 1950 and 1975, and the kitchens, bathrooms, and electrical panels are often original. Owners in Preston tend to know exactly what they want: a kitchen that finally functions properly, a bathroom that is not falling apart, and a basement that can be used as something other than storage. We do a lot of targeted remodels here, and we understand that these homeowners want practical, lasting results and not an oversell on finishes they do not need.

Cambridge — Hespeler

Hespeler

Hespeler has grown significantly over the past fifteen years and has a higher concentration of newer builds than the rest of Cambridge. These are homes built between 1995 and 2015, designed efficiently but not generously. Families who moved in when their kids were young are finding the floor plan no longer fits where life has taken them. Finished basements to reclaim space, main floor additions for a real mudroom or a bigger kitchen, second-storey additions to add bedrooms without moving. The newer construction here means structural work is more straightforward than in older parts of the city, which can keep costs and timelines more predictable.

Cambridge — East Cambridge and Eastway Gardens

East Cambridge and Eastway Gardens

East Cambridge and Eastway Gardens have a mix of housing built from the 1960s through the 1980s, owned largely by people who have lived there a long time and want to invest in their homes without being taken advantage of. The conversations here are practical. Homeowners want honest numbers, work that lasts, and a contractor who does not disappear mid-project. Whether it is a kitchen update, a legal basement apartment to offset the mortgage, or a bathroom that finally works the way it should, we approach every project in East Cambridge the same way: plan it thoroughly, price it honestly, build it right.

Our standard

Every Cambridge project is governed by the Complete Renovation Standard

The Complete Renovation Standard is the documented framework that governs every decision on every project we take on, from a basement finish in East Cambridge to a full gut renovation in Galt. Seven pillars: planning, design, finishes, infrastructure, longevity, tradesmanship, and communication. None of them are optional, and none of them change based on the neighbourhood or the budget.

Common questions

Questions from Cambridge homeowners

We are based in Cambridge. Brad lives here, the business is registered here, and the majority of our work is done within Cambridge and the immediately surrounding area. We are not a company headquartered in the GTA that lists every municipality in Ontario as a service area. When we say we know the permit office at the City of Cambridge, we mean we have been through that process repeatedly. When we say we know Galt's housing stock, we mean we have opened those walls and understand what they are hiding before we start budgeting.
Yes. Galt has some of the most interesting housing stock in Waterloo Region and we regularly renovate century homes in the area. Older homes require a specific approach: understanding what the original construction is likely hiding, knowing which systems need upgrading before finishes go in, and knowing when heritage designations or neighbourhood guidelines affect what you can do with the exterior. We plan more carefully for older homes because the unknowns are greater, and we surface those unknowns during the planning phase before they affect your budget mid-project.
You do not have to. When BB Carpentry manages your project as GC, we handle the full permit application with the City of Cambridge, coordinate all required inspections, and manage any revision requests from the building department. You are not required to understand the permit process or contact the city directly. Building permits in Cambridge are required for most renovation work involving framing, plumbing, electrical, or structural changes. We assess permit requirements during the planning phase and build that timeline into the project schedule from day one.
Yes. Legal secondary suites in Cambridge require a building permit, Ontario Building Code-compliant fire separation between units, minimum ceiling heights of 1.95 metres in habitable rooms, egress windows in sleeping areas, and typically a separate entrance. Zoning approval may also be required depending on your specific property. We manage the entire process including the permit application, fire separation construction, egress window installation, and all inspections with the City of Cambridge. A properly permitted suite generates legal rental income and does not expose you to the liability that comes with an unpermitted conversion.
We typically book 6 to 10 weeks out for full renovations and additions, and 4 to 6 weeks out for focused remodels and carpentry work, not including the planning phase. The planning phase itself runs 4 to 10 weeks before construction begins depending on scope and permit processing times with the City of Cambridge. If you have a specific target date in mind, reach out as early as possible. The planning call is free, takes about 20 minutes, and gives you a clear picture of the realistic timeline before you commit to anything.
